Abdominal Therapy
Abdominal Therapy supports the optimal function and alignment of the organs and fascia in the abdomen and pelvis. Gentle external massage focused on the belly enhances the flow of blood, lymph, nerve impulses, and qi in the abdomen. I also address restriction in the low back, hips, sacrum, and tailbone. Releasing these areas further removes congestion in the pelvic bowl.
Daily habits, stress, posture, injury, surgery, pregnancy, birth, and culture can all influence how the tissues and organs in the abdomen and pelvis function and relate to one another. When alignment or circulation is compromised, it can lead to discomfort and dysfunction. Prolapse, menstrual pain, incontinence, and constipation are some examples of a dysfunctional pelvic bowl. Working directly in this area we encourage the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate. Whatever your age or stage of life, this work can help you come back into right relationship with your creative center.
The form of Abdominal Therapy I practice was developed by Rosita Arvigo and originated from ancient Mayan massage practices. Learn more about the work, it’s history, and find supplemental readings at the Abdominal Therapy Collective.
To enhance the effects of the professional sessions, I teach and encourage a daily routine of abdominal self massage. Castor oil packs, perineal steaming, and variations on the traditional belly-wrap (faja) are supplemental modalities I also use when indicated.

What to expect
Maya Abdomimal Therapy in Portland, Oregon
Initial visits are 90 minutes and include a comprehensive intake, physical assessment, a treatment, and education for self-care between sessions.
During a Session: you will be unclothed and draped as you would for a regular massage. The massage covers the entire abdomen and just above the pubic bone, where the uterus sits. Sessions always include massage to your back, hips and sacrum to free up nerve flow to the abdominal and pelvic organs, and to align your pelvis for greater freedom! I also include some neck, shoulder work at the end to tie it all together.
Self massage: I will teach you the 10 minute abdominal self-massage routine created by Dr. Arvigo and be provided written guidance. Daily massage is encouraged between professional sessions to improve and accelerate results.
Supportive Modalities: Castor oil packs, perineal steams, and belly-wrapping may be suggested if indicated.
Follow-up appointments are scheduled every 2-4 weeks. For best results, plan on at least three of these 75 minute sessions.
The experience is slow, intentional, and supportive of deep rest and reconnection.
